First things first. Saturday, I started seriously considering hiring a running coach. I had been looking at a few coaches online, but decided to just submit a query. Before I knew it, I was chatting with a head coach of a group and a lot of what she said about how things would go made sense to me. After returning from our movie Saturday, I decided to go for it and signed up. By late that evening, I was assigned to a coach and she gave me a few instructions for my Sunday run – keep my heart rate in a certain place. Awesome. I’m excited! So, Sunday …
Sunday – 12.0 Miles
Sunday was my final long run of Little Rock half training. I was really excited to go to the park for my run after how well I ran last Sunday. Well, as I had done before, I filled my belt with water and Nuun and headed out. I didn’t make it down the street before the bottles with Nuun were leaking everywhere. No matter what I did, it wouldn’t stop. I thin the carbonation of the Nuun wasn’t working with the valves, but I’ve never really had an issue, so why??? Honestly, this is a concern because I had planned to use this belt for Chicago that does not allow packs. I have another belt that doesn’t use the same type of valve so I may have to experiment with that. What a pain! Anyway, I headed home and even though I didn’t need something so large, I took my Orange Mud 2 bottle pack, transferred the fluids and headed out again.
Once in the park, I stuck to intervals so my heart rate would stay low but I just really just wasn’t feeling it from the beginning. I even tried to slow down more than I had last week but I felt like I was working a little harder than I should and it never really got better. To add insult to injury (literally) my magical shoes that had worked last week seemed to give me all sorts of pains in my legs including shin pain so sadly, I’ll be returning them. I was so glad to be done with that run.
Monday – Strength
Let me start with the ugly – I have to do a weigh-in every Monday with my nutrition coach and the scale was a little up that morning. I admit, I went a little crazy feasting on popcorn and candy at the movies. I had no idea Twizzlers had so many calories! Anyway, I knew the weight gain was temporary, but I had to pay the piper. He agreed that the weight gain was probably temporary but he also decided to require me to check in 3 times per week instead of 1. I was surprised, but I also know that it will totally help keep me in line and actually appreciate it.
As far as the strength workout, it actually felt great. The last set was still tough, but it’s lot better than when I started and every set was tough!
Tuesday – 3 miles + strides
On Tuesday, I did something totally out of my comfort zone. I’ve belonged to an online running group for years now but never joined a run. With the exception of summer marathon training, I always run alone. It just so happened that I saw a run that was exactly what I needed so I decided to go for it and join them.
It was fantastic! It was crazy early (for me) but it was nice getting it done and having some company. I like running alone, but this was a nice change of pace. I had strides assigned for the end of the workout so I did those on my own afterwards and I really liked them. I’ve never done them before and they were so fun! The sun was rising just as I finished.
I showered after my run and worked but after dinner I decided to try an Epsom salt bath since I still had some aches from my Sunday long run. I haven’t sat in a tub in at least a decade! I’m not sure if it was the Epsom salts or just the hot water, but I have to admit that I did feel pretty good afterwards and I will definitely be doing it more often.
Wednesday – 6 mile Tempo
I had really hoped to get my run in before it started snowing but by the time the sun was up (I don’t run in the dark alone), it was coming down fast and furious, so I had to do a treadmill run for the first time in a long time. I also programmed my Garmin for a workout for the first time ever. The workout was 2 mile warm-up, 4x 3 min. @9:15-9:30 pace w/2 min recovery jog and cool down to 6 miles.
The warm up was easy. I set the treadmill for 12 min/mile and my Garmin was reading me at around 11:30/mile. When I got to the intervals, that’s when it got crazy. I wasn’t sure which speed on the treadmill was right since it’s not exact with my watch so my watch was berating me the whole time telling me I was either going too fast or too slow. I was glad when the intervals were over. Around the last mile, my leg started hurting again but I got through it. It really wasn’t that terrible. I think the different paces broke it up.
I ended up either a little too fast or a little too slow. I wonder if it’s easier or harder outdoors.
When I was running on the treadmill which is currently in our water damaged basement, I spent some time thinking about being able to use it more hopefully in the coming months. We plan to enclose a porch area to turn into a gym space and this will be my winter view (below) instead of a dreary, damaged, basement wall.
Thursday – Strength
So, in an attempt to fit in all the workouts by two different trainers, I appear to be without a rest day. While this is not ideal, I don’t feel like my first strength workout of the week isn’t really that hard so I don’t feel like it’s too much right now. I have no problem taking a day off in the future though if I feel like I need one. Also, I believe my time with the strength and nutrition coach was 10 weeks and this was week 7 so not much longer to go. If I continue (which I’d like to do since I need serious nutrition help for marathon training), I will have a chat with him about how to proceed with both strength and nutrition. My running coach wants me to do strength on easy days. I’m going to have to see where I can fit it in.
I ended up having to cut this workout short. Not only did my knee start to hurt after the 3rd set, but I ran out of time. I got in an hour though which I think is plenty.
Friday – Progression Run – 4 miles
Another first for me. I’ve never done a progression run and Tom joined me.
Success! I wasn’t sure I could do the last mile but I did it just fine.
After my run I rushed to get a much needed hair cut. I get Deva cuts and go in with clean, product-free hair so it’s a little on the wild side here. I wanted to go shorter.
And here’s the result. I absolutely love it! I’ve had long hair forever and I think those days are over.
Friday afternoon I headed to D.C. with my mom for a Marc Anthony concert. First we had a fantastic dinner at Cuba Libre.
The concert was fantastic. Marc Anthony is a legend and he did not disappoint!
We decided to spend the night after the concert and I’m glad we did because between the time it ended and having to drop my mom off, I’m not sure what time I would have gotten home. It was nice not to have to worry about it.
Saturday – 3 easy miles
I didn’t sleep great but got up early and went to the hotel gym for a few miles while mom slept in. It was one of the nicer hotel gyms I’ve seen and there were plenty of people using it.
After my run, we headed home and I was reunited with this one who is very attached to me and missed me so much that she wouldn’t eat while I was gone. She’s very quiet and when came in she was so happy she was whimpering. Poor Luna … I’m not sure what she’s going to do when I’m gone for 3 days.
Tom and Sydney are both sick and I’m just praying I can avoid it. I ended up catching something from Sydney last year just before my half in San Antonio and I recovered just barely in time for the race.
Next week at this time I should be drifting off to pre-race sleep! And, I’m heading to Little Rock alone. The friend I planned to travel with is injured and unable to run so this will be a solo adventure.
Just 1 week till Little Rock!!!!
