This was an absolutely insane week. I felt like I was in great shape with Christmas coming. All my shopping was done. Food ready to go with family coming and us hosting. But, you can’t plan for everything. The week has been a blur, but I’ll try to recap.
We got some very heavy rain Saturday and Sunday so I decided to hit the treadmill in our basement family room where Tom was watching TV. We have a small TV in the area by the treadmill but we rarely use it, so I asked Tom if he could connect it so I could pass the time with a movie or something and I left to finish getting ready. Well, when Tom got up he saw water. Our basement was starting to flood. That was the end of my running plans. We spent the rest of the day trying to stay ahead of the water.
Monday – Rest
Monday was a scheduled rest day and I actually needed it. I only got 90 minutes of sleep the night before because I spent the entire night vacuuming water. Tom doesn’t handle the unexpected so well, so I sent him to bed while I stayed up but he slept less than 3 hours anyway.
We ended up calling professionals who came with fans and dehumidifiers to help control moisture, keep mold at bay and tear out damage. It was helpful and they came to check the situation daily, but we were still left to handle the water ourselves.
Tuesday – 3 miles
I went to bed at midnight the night before after the last vacuuming and slept for 3 hours before getting up again to vacuum more water. I got 6 total hours which felt incredible after the night before so I went for a run. It was tough. I felt like I had never run a step in my life. I guess lifting all those buckets and the lack of sleep wore me out.
Wednesday – Rest
Another late night, but I got some work done in the morning. I ended up skipping my run because my back was unbelievably sore from bucket lifting.
Thursday – 5 miles
I felt much better compared to Wednesday, so I went out and I had a fantastic run! My basement was mostly dry but then it started raining again. Water started coming in again.
Friday – 3 miles + Strength
I don’t know where this weird weather came from, but it was in the low 60s and humid. In December. Terrible! I did a few circuits of my strength workout but cut it short. I still felt a little sore and just tired from my nightly bucket workouts and didn’t want to hurt myself.
As it continued to rain, more and more water started coming in to the point that we were nearly as bad as we had been Sunday. I stayed up till midnight then got up at 2:30 AM managing water.
Saturday – Rest
Since I have “late shift”, Tom gets “early shift” to handle the flood so I slept until about 8AM when he left for the gym. Water was starting to slow down, the rain finally had stopped and the sun was coming out.
It was cookie baking day, so I had no concrete workout plans. Sydney and I made dozens and dozens of cookies.
Luna also got a much needed bath and I took a nap before heading to the store for Sunday dinner groceries. The store was nice and empty just how I like it and I feel like I got everything accomplished. The best part of the day?
The water FINALLY stopped coming in!
Now, we’re just praying for a decent period of dry weather. We’ve lived in our house for 15 years and have only flooded twice – the last time being 4 years ago. It’s been very rainy in the past year and we have decided to invest in a waterproofing system. Our backs just can’t handle repeat floods. There’s some other work we want to do on the house so I think we’re going to have major construction ahead of us but for now the basement is a priority. Unfortunately, we can’t even get estimates until January so we’re just hoping for the best until then.
My mom and brother arrive tomorrow and the feasting and festivities will begin regardless of this week’s chaos. I still love Christmas!
